ABOUT SWOOPSHADES…
Swoopshades
are whimsical, festive, one-of-a-kind lampshades. These
flamboyant shades were originally inspired by vintage lamps of
the 1950’s -1970’s. Swoopshades are individually handcrafted
from such fanciful materials as lycra, rayon, and crushed velvet,
and are delicately trimmed with chenille, feather, or braid.
Available in multitudinous and ever-changing shapes and sizes, these
decorative lampshades can be customized to fit any lamp, sconce, or
chandelier. Dazzling, vibrant, and expressive, Swoopshades can
transform an otherwise overlooked accessory into a contemporary
design triumph.
Designer
Steven Light-Orr describes how Swoopshades began…
“I was working on the movie, and there was this
background lamp in a window, a blue lamp, with a nondescript
lampshade. I thought that it could use a better shade than it had. At the end of the
movie I bought the lamp, and brought it home. I destroyed the shade
and welded together a new one. I got
some stretchy, blue, lycra material and sewed a new cover for the
redesigned frame.
Once
I made one, I made another. I couldn’t stop. I guess it kind of
snowballed from there.”

about The Plamp…
The Plamp is a lamp and a plant. The Plamp is utilitarian and can be
filled with practically anything. A Plamp holds pens, pencils, and
business cards. A Plamp holds candy, toys, a television remote,
change, hairbrushes, mail, keys, sunglasses, lucky bamboo - The
possibilities are endless.
 As
a child, Steven always
thought that it would
be cool to have a very tall tree with a light
growing
out of the top of it. That image is what inspired
the Plamp.
Steven
developed the Plamp because he wanted expressive,
elegant lamp bases to go with all of the Swoopshades
he had been making.
The Plamp is a
Swoopshade’s
perfect mate.

an emphasis on scenic and lighting design, from the College of
Santa
Fe. He has worked extensively in theatre, film, and television.

Specializing in lighting, (Swoopshades, and
Plamp,) Steven also designs furniture, jewelry, kitchenware, web
sites, and screen savers.
The fact that his name is Light, is just a “funny coincidence,”
he says, “ I don’t really consider myself a lighting designer;
if anything, I would classify myself as more of an environmental
designer.”
Born in
Quito, Ecuador, raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Steven has finally found
his home, and his inspiration, in Venice, California.
